What Is Yoga?

  • The fourth limb is Pratyahama. The form looks towards creating an inner awareness so that the body can tune with the world as well the self.
  • Next follows Dharana, a limb that focuses on concentration with outside distractions.
  • Dhyana is uninterrupted concentration also commonly called meditation.
  • The last limb of yoga is Samadhi. The form focuses on attaining self-enlightenment.

Other than the above, yoga techniques are divided into six different categories. The first category is for the beginners. It comprises of several seated postures to increase the flexibility and strength of the body. This is followed by advanced standing techniques that involve yoga balance and strength. At the end of the yoga sequence of postures come the supine poses meant to relieve stress and improve flexibility.

Another useful yoga technique is the prone postures. These postures are great for beginners and are performed on the stomach. The poses help strengthen the abdomen and lower back muscles. Apart from the above, there are some balance postures, as well, that are great for improving memory and concentration.

The last category consists of twisted poses meant to realign and lengthen the spine. These postures are great for back muscles as they open and stretch them to their maximum limits.
